Description:
Ghent University of Belgium along with its “Special Research Fund” (BDF) is willing to support research groups from universities based in developing countries. Ghent University grants scholarships to those PHD students who are willing to do half of their research at Ghent University and the rest in a University based in a developing country. This scholarship program will avail the opportunity to work 24 months of time span out of 48 months of program at Ghent University (North). And the rest of the 24 months the candidates has to work in a university or a research center in a developing country (South).
No restrictions or preferences will be given to the choice of topics relevant to development corresponded with the global & national needs.
A candidate will be eligible to apply for the scholarship program after finding a teacher of Ghent University as his/her supervisor.

Benefits of this Scholarship:
- Researcher will be given an allowance of €1.903 per month.
- Both local and Ghent University promoter will get a bench fee of €15,440 to cover the operational costs.
Eligibility:
- The candidate must have the nationality of a developing country.
- The candidate must have a local supervisor at the selected partner university in the developing country(South).
- A written statement is requested from the university authority certifying the candidate’s working conditions stating if he is a full time PHD candidate or a staff member from the university
- Candidate will be sufficiently exempted from other assignments to concentrate on their PHD program fully.
- The statement should also assure that the candidate will get a certain amount of salary from the partner university in developing country(South).
- CSC scholarship holders are not allowed to apply for Doctoral Scholarships for Candidates from Developing Countries.
How to Apply:
- The candidate has to apply to Ghent University along with a promoter from Ghent University and a supervisor from the local university(South).
- The promoter from Ghent University has to fill up a document with advice on candidate and stating his/her opinions on the candidate’s potential as a future researcher.
- The Research Council makes a selection of the applications based in part on the recommendations which was obtained from members of the Council for Development Cooperation.
The selection is based on the things stated below:
- the qualifications of the applicant;
- the doctoral project;
- the relevance of the research topic for development;
- the scientific/scholarly potential of the promoter’s research group(s);
- the partnership between Ghent University and the local institute;
- the scientific/scholarly potential of the local institute
The application has to be submitted before the deadline of 1st March, 2016.
