 Description:  The Mary Potter Foundation supports specialised palliative and end of life care, unique support programs, education and research for people with life limiting illnesses and their families. The grant aims to introduce students to holistic approaches to their practice of care, enabling them to provide culturally sensitive and high quality coordinated care to seriously ill and dying patients and their families in a variety of settings (be it in-hospital or ambulatory; rural or urban). The grant will create opportunities for career development for students in palliative care nursing.

 Annual Comment:  The grant is valued at $1,000. Payment will be made 2 instalments of $500 after the Study Period 2 and Study Period 5 census dates provided the recipient continues to meet the grant criteria and maintains satisfactory academic progress.

 Eligibility:  Applicants must: be full-time students undertaking their second year of the Bachelor of Nursing (IBNU) program; be eligible to enrol in Nursing Context of Practice in the third year of their program; demonstrate an interest in palliative care as a career; choose the Palliative Care Specialisation when undertake Nursing Contexts of Practice in the third year of their program; be willing to undertake a placement at the Mary Potter Hospice during their 8 week Experiential Learning Activity: Extension to Practice Practicum 4 and, if the opportunity arises, be willing to speak constructively and positively about the important work that nurses do in palliative care. Applicants will be asked to provide a written statement of 500 words detailing their career objectives, their interest in palliative care and how the grant will assist them in achieving their goals. Selection will be based on academic merit and a written statement.
