In 1987, the World Bank, with funding from the Government of Japan, established the Scholarship Program Joint Japan World Bank Scholarship Program for graduate studies in developing countries students to pursue masters programs at participating universities around the world. Even Japanese nationals of mid-career professionals who have been currently enrolled in development-related master’s or Ph.D. graduate programs take the scholarship outside of Japan.
As the aim of this scholarship is for professionals building the careers that focus on poverty mitigation and shared the success in developing countries scholars from development countries must commit to returning home to their country after complete the graduation. This will help them to serve the country in a better way with enhancing knowledge and skills in order to develop their communities, countries and regions.
Scholarship Provider:
In order to create an international community with highly trained professionals working in the field of social and economic development in the development countries, this scholarship is associated with two sectors, Preferred master’s programs and Partner master’s programs which are only applicable to masters programs.
Area of study:
The scholarship is divided into two parts.
- Partner Program Scholarship.
- Preferred Program Scholarship.
Partner Program scholarship applicants must first apply for admission to one or more of the Partner Master’s Degree Program(s).Eligible candidates will be short listed on that program and will be invited to apply for a JJ/WBGSP scholarship.

In Preferred Program the applicants must in parallel, apply to the universities for admission to the Preferred Program(s) and apply for a JJWBGSP scholarship through a call for on-line applications. - Fully funded
- Tuition for the graduate program,
- Monthly subsistence allowance including books,
- Economy class air travel,
- Basic medical insurance including accident through the university.

***All JJ/WBGSP partner and preferred masters programs a supplement and does not duplicate and you may have some other financial support. The scholarship only valid for 2 years or less covers the duration of the program.
Eligibility:
The applicant must meet the following entitlement.
- Be a national of a World Bank member country.
- Not be a dual citizen of any developed country.
- Be under the age of 45 on the Application Deadline date.
- Not be an Executive Director, his/her alternate, and/or staff of all types of appointments of the World Bank Group.
- Hold a Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent university degree).
- Have at least 3 years of development-related experience since earning a Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent university degree) and within the past six years from the date of the Application Deadline.
- Have been accepted unconditionally (except for funding) to enroll in the upcoming academic year in one of the JJ/WBGSP preferred university master’s programs listed on the JJ/WBGSP website, and located outside of the applicant’s country of citizenship and country of residence.
- Be in good health, with respect to the capacity to be a productive scholar on a continuous full-time basis for the duration of the master’s program, as certified by a medical doctor less than 3 months before the start of the master’s program.
- Not received any scholarship funding to earn a Graduate degree or its equivalent from any other sources funded by the government of Japan.

The call for applications for a JJWBGSP Scholarship is scheduled to open January 25, 2017
Applicants should follow the following steps before getting a call.
- Know in details about Eligibility and applying process the website is given below and decide which program is matched with the criteria.
- Once the call for scholarship applications comes to finance one of the preferred master degrees is open, the application guidelines, online application, and a complete and finalized list of eligibility criteria will be available on this site.
- The application must be completed online and include two professional references. Any documents an applicant provides by email, post or any means other than the online application form will not be reviewed.
- For preferred master’s programs, you need toapply to the university to be accepted into the program and also apply directly to JJ/WBGSP for the scholarship.
- For partner master’s programs, please firstapply to at least one of the partner university master’s programs. The university will send the JJ/WBGSP Secretariat a short list of eligible candidates and the JJ/WBGSP Steering Committee will award scholarships to a subset of the short-listed applicants.
