IRO Doctoral Scholarship Programme

K.U. Leuven offers Doctoral scholarships every academic year to remarkably deserving students from developing countries to do research and obtain their PhD at the largest university in Flanders, Belgium. The scholarship programme is organized and managed by the University’s Interfaculty Council for Development Co-operation (IRO) as a strengthen development cooperation. Over a hundred exceptional students have obtained their PhD with the support of IRO Doctoral Scholarship Programme in the past.  These scholars are now  using their obtained knowledge and expertise in their respective home counties.

Area of Study:

 

Doctoral or pre-doctoral programmes in the Schools of Humanities and Social Sciences, Science, Engineering and Technology, or Biomedical Sciences.  

 

Benefits of this Scholarship:

 

  • The tuition fees of the scholarship recipients are waived
  • A monthly allowance will be given to the scholarship recipients
  • Installation allowance will be given to cover all kinds of general expenses incurred by the student
  • The scholarship will pay for health insurance, as well as accident insurance
  • Return air tickets will be provided for scholarship recipients to travel to home country

 

 

Eligibility:

 

  • The candidate must be a citizen of one of the countries on the OCDE DAC table
  • The candidate must not possess any EU citizenship or a long-term EU residence permit
  • The applicant must have completed the most recent master’s degree within ten years prior to 1 October 2017
  • The candidates with second class second or lower division are not eligible for the scholarship
  • The candidate must propose a research project that has development relevance and the proposal must have excellent academic quality
  • The posted vacancies on the KU Leuven website are already funded; therefore candidates of such vacancies cannot participate for the IRO scholarship programme
  • The candidate must be interested in development-oriented work
  • The candidate must be backed by a KU Leuven promoter
  • To ensure the utilization and application of the research within the candidate’s home country, the candidate must also be backed by a local co-promoter at his/her home country
  • The candidate must possess excellent recommendations from relevant referees
  • The candidate must follow the application procedure. The deadline for the submission of candidate file is 13 November

  • After activating the Guest Account, download the Application Form using this link: Web application Applicant. Please note that the validity of the Application Form expires three months after downloading. Please send the form online before the validity expires
  • After completing the Application Form, save and submit it using the ‘Send Form’ button.
  • No Payment is required for the doctoral programmes
  • Applicant must upload all required documents as attachments. Please note that applications without the core documents and additional documents will be deleted after a month. Check the list of core documents and additional documents here
  • Please mail the first page of your Application Form and the certified copies of your diplomas and transcript of records and translations (in hard copy) to the following address:

  • Follow-up the status of your application via Web application Applicant
  • After receiving confirmation about the decision made about your application via e-mail, you first need to accept the offer before the official letter of admission can be sent to you. After receiving your acceptance, a PDF copy of the official letter of admission will be sent to you via e-mai.
