Scholarship Name: Bush Children’s Education Foundation Professor Garth Gaudry Memorial Scholarship
Description: The product of a one-teacher isolated school, provincial High School and the University of Queensland, Garth Gaudry empathized with the difficulties encountered by bush students. He had a lifelong love of learning, gaining a doctorate at ANU & subsequently professorships of Mathematics at Flinders University, the University of New South Wales & latterly Director, the Australian Mathematical Science Institute, University of Melbourne. He was passionate about the pursuit of academic excellence in all aspects of Mathematics including the school curriculum from the primary years through to tertiary studies, and had oversight of a range of school textbooks. Garth’s influence extended to lectureships and research in some of the world’s finest universities including those in the USA, Great Britain and Europe. At home, he took pleasure when students from remote areas attended his university summer schools. It is a privilege for the Bush Children’s Education Foundation of NSW to offer this Science based scholarship in memory of this outstanding Australian.

Annual Comment: The scholarship is paid in instalments valued at $3,000 per year for up to 3 years. Payments are subject to the student maintaining a minimum 4.0 average with ongoing enrolment.

Eligibility: Applicants must be enrolled in the first year of the Bachelor of Veterinary Science / Bachelor of Veterinary Biology, Bachelor of Animal Science, Bachelor of Agricultural Science, Bachelor of Dental Science, Bachelor of Medical Science, or Bachelor of Medical Radiation Science. Applicants must: be from a remote/isolated area of NSW; be experiencing financial hardship; be studying for a career that could be applied to a rural context; have a strong empathy with the bush community; and submit a 250 word essay. Preference may be given to applicants who were in receipt of the Federal Government’s AIC Allowance (supporting documentation to be provided). Preference will also be given to students studying at Bathurst, Dubbo or Orange.
