APAs are provided to assist with general living costs. Eligibility: Applicants must: be Australian or New Zealand citizens or Australian permanent residents; be eligible for entry into a PhD or MPhil at Macquarie University; not have previously held an Australian government research scholarship for more than 6 months; not be in receipt of an equivalent award (greater than 75 per cent of the base stipend); and not have completed a degree at the same level or higher than that proposed. To meet minimum scholarship criteria it would be expected prospective applicants will also have additional research experience and qualifications, such as a record of competitive prizes and awards, research publications, conference papers and/or relevant work related research experience.

Other Details: Subjects for this award are unrestricted but should be focused on Macquarie’s areas of research strength. Candidates are also encouraged to consider applying for a cotutelle agreement with an overseas partner institution. The University may credit periods of study already undertaken towards a research degree as advanced standing. If this occurs, the periods of study before the beginning of the APA will be deducted from its maximum period of tenure.
